Smith Consult worked with the University of Bristol to refurbish and restructure their office provision at Howard House and Maggs House in the centre of Bristol.
Our initial involvement was at Howard House, to survey and report on the Feasibility of refurbishing levels 1 and 3 to provide modular office accommodation. Subsequently we carried out the building services design for Phase 1 on the third floor and Phase 2 on the first floor.
Level 3 was refurbished to provide cellular offices for academics, student tutorial room and communal kitchen.
Level 1 was also refurbished to provide two large PC labs and seminar room.
The phases were carried out within an occupied building and required close supervision.
We included a Thermal Modelling Comfort Report within our design and options reports and end stage reports throughout the process.
Phase 3 initially began as a redevelopment and refurbishment project across remaining levels 0, 2, 4, 5 and 6 in Howard House but subsequently grew to include refurbishment works at the University’s Maggs House, adjacent building.
Phase 3 design has recently been completed and the phased construction programme is underway, with completion due August 2020, ready for the new September academic year start.
This contract phase is valued at £2.5million and covers a light touch refurbishment to the remaining floors at Howard House.
At Maggs House, a number of departments will be relocated into the 2nd and 3rd floors and the office space refurbished in phases. A cycle store and showering/changing facilities will be provided.
